Shaun wrote his first published novel in 1994 – or thereabouts – and it was an alternative history tale set in a timeline where the Germans had won the Second World War. First entitled “Heil Fuhrer”, it was renamed “die Stunde X” (German for zero hour), and followed Jerome Varley, a young man with a German girlfriend who fell into the British resistance after his father was executed as a traitor. Shaun never envisaged that he would ever write a sequel, and that remained the case for twenty years or so, when he penned the follow-up, “nach Schema F”, in 2014. Two more novels have followed, and at the moment he is busy working on the fifth in what he has planned as a six-book series.

One character has featured in all four novels thus far. The German agent Ellen Brauchitsch. But the story arc spreads far beyond Ellen’s depressing existence. In the first three novels, British resistance – supported by the US and the Soviet Union – fight against German occupation that is brutal and efficient. The fourth novel – the first in the Lebensraum trilogy – brings the Germans to the shores of America as a third world war erupts, and threatens to destroy all of humanity.
