Maggie’s Children

A novel without a proper blurb, “Maggie’s Children” is difficult to describe. The lead character, Saul Castle, meets up with his old Uni friends every year (they refer to themselves as Maggie’s Children because Margaret Thatcher was the Prime Minister when they began university), and he watches as each of them becomes successful. But success hasn’t come to Saul. Neither has any kind of good fortune. Bad luck seems to follow him around.

Then he realizes that none of his Uni friends are without their own problems

“Maggie’s Children” is, like some of Shaun’s other novels, a tale of redemption, where even those who are guilty of causing pain and suffering not only to others, but to themselves, are given the opportunity for a second chance.

If only Saul would seize that opportunity, what might he find on the other side?
