A fractured United Kingdom, on the verge of civil war. What if elements from the armed forces turned on the government and seized part of the country?
About
Shaun first began working on a story called Dark Satanic Mills way back in the late 1990s. An early manuscript of 150,000 words was lost, and so he began working on a rewrite in 2017. He took the decision to split the tale into three volumes. The first volume, “England’s Pleasant Pastures”, was published in 2023.
The UK, a few years from now …
A country in financial decline and ripped apart by violent race riots; nationalist extremism fighting against Islamic fundamentalism, and both sides fighting the police; a government unable to find solutions that work, unable to please everyone; a parliament full of large numbers of MPs from nationalist, Islamic and socialist parties, extremism garnering more support from a divided electorate desperate to be heard; a depleted military, overstretched and committed to fighting wars across the globe to keep the peace and spread democracy, the soldiers far from home and bitter, watching their comrades dying for causes in which they do not believe.
Against this backdrop, Lt. Gen. William Fairfax, decorated war hero, leads a military uprising which seizes two towns on the east coast. His Revolutionary Army numbers 3,000, all former soldiers, backed by foreign states. British Prime Minister Mark Delaney instructs General Throckmorton to command what remains of the British Army and retake the occupied territory.
But in a divided United Kingdom, its nations all desperate for independence from one another, a military which does not know on what side to place its allegiance, with a government that is barely holding itself together, and an insurrection which threatens to spread across the country, loyalties can never be assured, and the future will always remain uncertain.
